Excessive sweating can cause unnecessary social embarrassment especially when it occurs to underarm and palm, especially in hot summer. Body odour can also be accentuated when excessive sweat and sebum adhering to underarm hair, creating a “warm-bed” for skin flora, and resulting in stink odour. Botulinum toxin can block the neurotransmission to sweat glands and hence reduce sweat production. Although it cannot remove the smell, it can reduce its severity. The treatment effect can last for 7-8 months but subjected to individual response in terms of lifestyle and diet habit.

    Botulinum Toxin for Excessive Sweating

    Excessive sweating especially to armpit or palms may create social embarrassment. For those who do not want to consider surgical intervention, botulinum toxin (BTx) can be considered as an excellent alternative. The neurotransmitter, Acetylcholine, can not only stimulate muscular contraction, it also stimulates the nerve ending of the sweat glands and resulted sweat production. Clinically, botulinum toxin can block the stimulation of sweat glands and hence to reduce excessive sweating, in case, it can also reduce the odour resulted from the excessive sweating. There may be slight redness to the sites of injection which will only last for few hours. However, those with neuromuscular diseases, pregnant or lactating mother are not advised for botulinum toxin injection. It is important to seek medical advice before deciding the treatment.
