Eyebrow Sparse / Loss / Hypotrichosis

Eyebrow is placed in the center of face and has an important role at framing the face. There are many causes leading to loss of eyebrow hair:

1) The most common one is self-plucking especially when trimming the shape of the eyebrow, over plucking can lead to permanent loss of eyebrow hair.

2) Some Asian ladies may lose their eyebrow during laser tattoo removal for their eyebrow tattoo or emobroidery.

3) Other causes include accidient, burn injury, surgery, thyroid dysfunction, radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

4) Normal physiological aging can lead to gradual thinning and falling out of eyebrow hair.

5) Alopecia Areata can affect eyebrow hair apart from scalp hair.

6) There is also rarer psychological cause such as trichotillomania.

  • Eyebrow Transplant

    Eyebrow Transplant

Eyebrow transplant holds the same principle as hair transplant. Prior to surgery, doctor will communicate well with patients regarding eyebrow shape and positioning, the marking out the desirable eyebrow shape. Generally speaking, female eyebrow shape tends to be slimmer whereas male eyebrow shape tends to be broad and thicker. A small segment of skin was harvested from the back of head donor area under local anesthesia, then wound edge was approximated and closed with Trichophytic Closure.

The harvested strip of skin will be dissected into single hair follicle under powered stereomicroscope as all eyebrow hairs are single hair follicle. The dissected hair follicles will be implanted into the marked out area at the eyebrow area. Swelling will be subsided within few days and sutured from the donor area will be removed after 10 days.

Newly implanted hair will shed as normal process 2 weeks after surgery, new hair will start growing 2-3 months after surgery. Regular trimming of newly transplanted eye is required to maintain them at desirable length and will appear more organized. Eyebrow gel or wax may be required at the beginning to fix the shape of eyebrow, but gradually over time, the growth rate of the scalp hair at the eyebrow site will slow down.
