Atopic Dermatitis of the Scalp

Atopic Dermatitis of the Scalp is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, intensive itchiness resulted repeated scratching, leaving thick lichenification over the affected areas. This skin condition has been affecting 10-15% of the population, among those 30% is of hereditary. Apart from scalp skin, it can also affect other body parts, commonly seen over the extensor surfaces of limbs. Erythrodermic atopic dermatitis is the common clinical presentation, where the affected area will be intensely itch, with scaling inflammation, and repeated scratching, not only causing damage to hair shaft, but also leading to focal thickening of skin (lichenification). If scratching is vigorous, it can cause wound to skin surface and resulted bacterial or herpes simplex infection.
