Alopecia Areata is a common non-scarring hair loss problem, it presents normally with a round or oval shape bald patch on scalp, incidentally detected by family members or hair stylists. It can progress to involve bigger areas, and small portion of patients can progress to involve the whole scalp hair loss (Alopecia Totalis), more commonly seen in adolescence. 


Even worse, very small percentages of patients will further deteriorate to involve whole body hair loss (Alopecia Universalis) which is very rare indeed. The pathogenesis of condition is due to T lymphocytes attacks hair shaft portion in the dermal layer, leading to hair breakage. It is believed to be triggered by psychological stress.
